Kabaka Mutebi Calls for Action Against Lawlessness, Warns Over Rising Land Grabbing in Uganda

MENGO, Uganda – Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II has called on government institutions and security agencies to intensify efforts against growing lawlessness and land grabbing, warning that such practices threaten peace, stability, and development across the country.

Speaking during a meeting with clan leaders at his palace in Mengo, the Kabaka expressed concern over increasing incidents of vigilantism, violence, and unlawful actions by individuals who choose to take matters into their own hands.

“We condemn the practice of taking the law into one’s own hands. Those involved should change their ways so that peace, dignity and stability can prevail in our country,” the Kabaka said.

Kabaka Condemns Vigilantism and Insecurity

The Buganda monarch noted that reports of lawlessness and insecurity continue to emerge from different parts of the country, affecting communities and undermining public confidence in the rule of law.

He urged responsible authorities to strengthen enforcement mechanisms and ensure that justice is delivered through lawful channels.

The Kabaka also extended sympathy to individuals and communities affected by violence and other forms of unlawful conduct, emphasizing the need for peaceful coexistence and respect for the law.

Concern Over Increasing Land Grabbing Cases

A key issue raised during the meeting was the growing problem of land grabbing, which the Kabaka described as a serious threat to families, livelihoods, and future generations.

He encouraged communities to remain vigilant and work collectively to protect their land and property rights.

“Protect your land and work together as communities. Unity and cooperation are essential if we are to fight poverty and secure our future,” he said.

The monarch stressed that land remains one of the most valuable assets for many Ugandan families and should be safeguarded against illegal acquisition and exploitation.

Call to Preserve Buganda Culture and Heritage

Beyond security and land issues, the Kabaka challenged clan leaders to play a greater role in preserving Buganda’s cultural identity.

He urged the Abataka (clan heads) to educate younger generations about Buganda’s history, traditions, customs, and values.

“Our children must know their roots. We must teach them our culture, values and history so that they understand the importance of preserving our heritage,” he said.

First Major Meeting With Clan Leaders in Recent Months

The meeting brought together clan heads from across the Buganda Kingdom and marked the Kabaka’s first official engagement with the Abataka in recent months.

Discussions focused on issues affecting clans, cultural preservation, community development, and strengthening unity within the kingdom.

Kabaka Mutebi commended the clan leaders for their continued service to Buganda and encouraged them to remain committed to promoting social cohesion, cultural values, and economic development in their respective communities.

The monarch’s remarks come at a time when concerns over land disputes, insecurity, and cultural preservation remain key issues in several parts of Uganda.
