Two Arrested in Mubende for Allegedly Supplying Dog Meat to Roast Meat (‘Mchomo’) Businesses

MUBENDE, Uganda – Police in Mubende District have arrested two suspects accused of slaughtering dogs and supplying the meat to roadside roasted meat, commonly known as “mchomo,” vendors within the municipality.

The suspects, identified as James Twinamatsiko and Reponse Habimana, were arrested during a late-night police operation after officers intercepted a motorcycle carrying what was described as a suspicious load.

According to police sources, the incident occurred in the early hours of June 13, 2026, at around 12:30 a.m. No. 58500 Corporal Paul Nkugwa, attached to Mubende Central Police Station (CPS), was conducting a routine motorized patrol along Mubende Main Street when he noticed a motorcycle, registration number UGP 078K, transporting a large polythene bag and a passenger under suspicious circumstances.

When officers ordered the rider to stop for inspection, he allegedly ignored the instructions and attempted to flee, prompting a pursuit by the patrol team.

Police eventually apprehended the suspects and conducted a search, during which they reportedly discovered four slaughtered dogs concealed in the bag.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects allegedly admitted to supplying dog meat to vendors who sell roasted meat in various parts of Mubende Municipality. Police claim the pair described the trade as their regular source of income.

The suspects are currently being held at Mubende CPS and face charges related to animal cruelty and injuring animals under Criminal Reference Book (CRB) 778/2026.

The arrests have sparked concern among residents, with authorities urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspected illegal meat trade activities. Police say investigations are ongoing to establish whether other individuals may be involved in the alleged operation.

Authorities have also warned meat vendors against sourcing products from unverified suppliers, emphasizing the importance of adhering to public health and food safety regulations.
