Museveni Urges NRM Members to Shun Independent Candidacy, Calls for Party Unity

Kampala, Uganda – September 23, 2025:
NRM National Chairman and presidential flag bearer, General Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, has called on all party members to reject the path of independent candidacy, urging those dissatisfied with primary outcomes to seek redress through internal party structures.

Speaking during his first campaign rally shortly after being officially nominated by the Electoral Commission as the NRM presidential flag bearer for the 2026 elections, President Museveni cautioned that the NRM’s 18.5 million strong voter base is unlikely to support candidates running outside the party framework.

“If you go independent, don’t expect support from our voters. We have systems in place to resolve disputes. Use them,” Museveni emphasized.

The event, held on Tuesday, 23rd September 2025, also saw NRM National Vice Chairperson, Alhaji Moses Kigongo, officially hand over the party flag to General Museveni, signaling the party’s unified backing for his next presidential bid.

Kigongo rallied the nation to stand behind Museveni, describing him as “the best choice to ensure Uganda’s stability and continuity.” He further warned against supporting candidates who chose to go independent after losing in the NRM primaries, urging party loyalists to maintain cohesion.

“The NRM has clear processes. Those who defy them by going independent should not be rewarded,” Kigongo stated.

The rally marked the beginning of Museveni’s campaign journey toward securing another term in office, with the party leadership emphasizing discipline, loyalty, and unity as key pillars for electoral success.
