“Waiswa Mufumbiro Remanded Again by Nakawa Court Until January 6 Over Incitement Charges”

KAMPALA, UGANDA — Waiswa Mufumbiro, the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) parliamentary candidate for Nakawa East, has been further remanded in custody by Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court until January 6, 2026. Mufumbiro, who is facing serious charges of inciting party supporters to murder a security personnel, appeared before Magistrate Andrew Katurubuki for a progress hearing on police investigations.

Mufumbiro’s Request for Temporary Release Denied

During the hearing, Mufumbiro’s defense team requested his temporary release on humanitarian grounds, citing the poor health of his wife, who reportedly requires his care. However, Magistrate Katurubuki explained that he lacked the authority to grant the release, as only the trial magistrate — who is currently on leave — has the power to make such a decision. The court further instructed prosecutors to expedite the ongoing investigation into the charges.

Incitement Charges in Kampala

The 39-year-old Mufumbiro is accused of inciting violence and encouraging NUP supporters to attack security personnel in Kampala on September 4, 2025. The charges include incitement to commit an offense under Section 21(1) of the Penal Code Act. Prosecutors claim Mufumbiro encouraged his supporters to engage in violent acts, including the murder of security forces. Mufumbiro has denied all charges.

Additional Charges in Kawempe Court

In addition to the current charges, Mufumbiro faces another set of serious allegations before the Kawempe Magistrate’s Court in Kanyanya. These relate to an unauthorized military-style parade allegedly held at the NUP headquarters in Makerere-Kavule in February 2025. Mufumbiro was initially remanded in September 2025 in connection with this case.

He is scheduled to appear in Kawempe Court on December 22 for a ruling on his application for mandatory release after more than 60 days in remand without trial. Mufumbiro’s legal team is seeking his release on the grounds of unlawful detention.

Other Co-Accused in Kawempe Case

Several individuals are co-accused alongside Mufumbiro in the Kawempe case, including high-profile NUP members such as Edward Ssebuufu (Eddie Mutwe), Kivumbi Achileo, and Tasi Calvin (Bobi Giant). They face charges of unlawful drilling, conspiracy to commit a felony, and wearing uniforms resembling security forces. The prosecution alleges these offences were committed during a February 12, 2025, incident at the NUP offices in Makerere-Kavule.

Additional Robbery Charges for Some Accused

In addition to the aforementioned charges, some of the accused individuals are also facing robbery-related charges. The prosecution claims they were involved in robbing mourners and journalists of mobile phones and cash during a funeral last year in Masaka. All accused individuals, including Mufumbiro, deny the charges. Several bail applications have been rejected, and the case continues to unfold.

Court Proceedings and Legal Developments

Mufumbiro’s case has garnered significant attention, with ongoing debates about his detention and the political implications of the charges. His supporters and legal team have maintained his innocence, arguing that the charges are politically motivated. As investigations continue, the court proceedings are expected to play a key role in Uganda’s political landscape ahead of upcoming elections.
