NUP Makes U-Turn, Seeks to Join IPOD Ahead of 2026 Political Engagements

KAMPALA – The opposition-led National Unity Platform (NUP) has formally expressed interest in joining the Inter-Party Organisation for Dialogue (IPOD), marking a significant shift from its previous position of distancing itself from the political dialogue platform.

The move signals a major change in strategy by Uganda’s largest opposition party as it seeks greater engagement in national political processes and discussions involving registered political parties.

For years, NUP had remained outside IPOD, citing concerns over the organization’s effectiveness and its relationship with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM). Party leaders had previously argued that the platform was being used to legitimise what they described as undemocratic practices rather than addressing key governance issues.

However, party officials now say participation in IPOD could provide an opportunity to advance democratic reforms, advocate for electoral transparency, and push for respect for human rights and the rule of law.

The development comes at a time when political parties are increasingly positioning themselves ahead of future national engagements and discussions on electoral reforms.

Political analysts view NUP’s decision as a pragmatic shift that could strengthen opposition participation in formal political dialogue while providing the party with an additional platform to articulate its policy positions and concerns.

IPOD brings together leaders of registered political parties to discuss matters of national importance, governance, electoral processes, and peaceful political competition. Membership also enables parties to participate in structured dialogue aimed at reducing political tensions and promoting consensus-building.

While some supporters have welcomed the decision as a strategic move, others have questioned whether the platform can deliver meaningful reforms. NUP leaders maintain that joining IPOD does not mean abandoning the party’s principles but rather expanding avenues for engagement and advocacy.

The party is expected to communicate further details regarding its application and the objectives it hopes to pursue through participation in the dialogue forum.
