Yoweri Museveni Warns MPs Against Corruption, Urges Focus on Wealth Creation
KYANKWANZI, UGANDA — April 2026 — President Yoweri Museveni has issued a strong warning to Members of Parliament against corruption, describing it as a major threat to Uganda’s development and governance.
Speaking at the close of the 2026 National Resistance Movement (NRM) retreat for MPs-elect at the National Leadership Institute (NALI) in Kyankwanzi, Museveni urged legislators to uphold integrity and prioritize wealth creation initiatives.
Museveni Issues Strong Anti-Corruption Warning
“I do not want to hear of corruption in Parliament,” Museveni said, emphasizing the oversight role of legislators.
“If there is corruption in Parliament, how will you control others? You are the oversight body,” he added, warning that corruption could derail national progress.
“It will kill Uganda; it is suicide and must not be tolerated.”
The President also condemned reports of MPs allegedly soliciting bribes to pass government budgets, calling for an immediate end to the practice.
“I have heard that some people demand money before passing budgets. This must stop,” he said.
He further cautioned that any politician found bribing their way into positions would face disqualification.
Focus on Parish Development Model (PDM)
Museveni reiterated the importance of the Parish Development Model (PDM), urging proper use of funds to transform livelihoods.
“This money we are sending to the people can change their lives if used properly,” he said, advising citizens to avoid unnecessary borrowing from money lenders and banks.
NRM Retreat and National Development Agenda
The week-long retreat, which began on April 7, was held under the theme of strengthening leadership to protect national gains and accelerate Uganda’s transition to a higher middle-income economy.
Vice President Jessica Alupo commended MPs-elect for their participation, describing the retreat as vital for building ideological clarity and leadership discipline.
Meanwhile, Richard Todwong, Secretary General of the NRM, presented key resolutions, highlighting the role of legislators in safeguarding the country’s progress.
Historical Reflection and Kyankwanzi Visit
Ahead of the closing session, Museveni hosted MPs at Ngoma State Lodge, where he reflected on Uganda’s liberation struggle, including a 1984 attack on Masindi Barracks led by Caleb Akandwanaho, also known as Salim Saleh.
He noted that Kyankwanzi’s strategic location—near River Mayanja and River Kafu—played a key role during the struggle and remains important for leadership training and reflection.
Economic Transformation and Agriculture
Museveni highlighted progress in Uganda’s cattle corridor, attributing improvements to mindset change and adoption of income-generating activities like dairy farming.
He encouraged farmers to adopt modern practices, including improved pasture management to boost productivity.
The President also pledged continued investment in infrastructure to enhance connectivity and support economic growth.
