Bus Driver Dies in Bugweri Road Accident

An Amuria High School bus driver has died following a fatal road accident involving a school bus and a stationary Mercedes-Benz Actros trailer along the Mbale–Iganga Highway in Bugweri District.

The crash occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at approximately 4:45 a.m., according to Busoga East Regional Police spokesperson ASP Michael Kasadha.

School Bus Rammed Stationary Trailer

Police said the school bus was travelling from Mbale carrying 73 students when it reached Nawangisa Village and crashed into the rear of a stationary trailer, registration number UBB 269V.

The bus belonged to Amuria High School but was transporting students from St. Paul Secondary School, Katakwi, who were travelling to Kasenyi Landing Site in Entebbe for a geography study tour.

Driver Dies, 15 Others Injured

The deceased has been identified as Kasakya Abdallah, 68, who was driving the bus at the time of the crash.

Police confirmed that the driver died instantly at the scene.

The accident also left 15 people injured, including:

  • 13 students
  • One teacher
  • The bus conductor

The victims sustained injuries of varying severity and were rushed to Iganga General Hospital for medical treatment.

Police Launch Investigation

Traffic officers led by the Regional Traffic Officer responded to the scene, documented the accident, and began investigations into its cause.

Kasakya Abdallah’s body was taken to Iganga Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Meanwhile, both the school bus and the trailer were towed to Busembatya Police Station, where they will undergo inspection by traffic investigators.

Police have not yet confirmed what caused the collision, and investigations remain ongoing.

Police Urge Road Safety

Following the crash, police appealed to motorists, commercial drivers, and other road users to exercise greater caution while travelling, particularly during early morning hours.

Authorities urged drivers to observe traffic regulations, maintain safe speeds, and remain alert to avoid similar tragedies on Uganda’s roads.

The latest accident adds to growing concerns over road safety in Uganda, where crashes involving passenger vehicles and heavy trucks continue to claim lives and leave many others injured.
