Concern Grows Over Gen Moses Ali’s Health as Veteran Politician Remains Hospitalised
KAMPALA — Concern is growing over the health of veteran Ugandan politician and retired military officer Gen. (Rtd) Moses Ali, who remains admitted to Nakasero Hospital after being hospitalised earlier this week.
The 87-year-old former Second Deputy Prime Minister has been receiving medical treatment at the private Kampala facility since the beginning of the week, according to sources familiar with the situation.
On Friday morning, members of Gen Moses Ali’s family held a closed-door meeting at the hospital. Several of his children, including some who travelled from outside Uganda, were seen arriving at the facility throughout the day.
Among those present was his son, State Minister for Works Ali Siraj.
When approached for an update on his father’s condition after the family meeting, Siraj declined to comment.
“Please don’t write it,” he reportedly told journalists.
Later in the afternoon, one of Gen Moses Ali’s daughters, who had travelled from Sudan, told journalists that her father’s condition “was not good” but declined to provide further details.
Government Confirms Moses Ali Is Receiving Treatment
The government has confirmed that the veteran statesman remains under medical care.
Speaking at the Government Media Centre on Friday, Minister for ICT and National Guidance Justine Kasule Lumumba said Gen Moses Ali was receiving treatment but did not disclose the nature of his illness or provide details about his prognosis.
The development has triggered growing public concern and widespread speculation on social media about the condition of one of Uganda’s longest-serving political and military figures.
No official statement has been issued detailing the illness for which Gen Moses Ali is receiving treatment.
Moses Ali’s Long Political and Military Career
Born on April 5, 1939, Gen Moses Ali has played a major role in Uganda’s political and military history for more than five decades.
He served as a senior military commander and Cabinet minister during the administration of former President Idi Amin before later leading the Uganda National Rescue Front (UNRF) rebellion in the early 1980s.
Following a peace agreement with President Yoweri Museveni’s government in 1986, Gen Moses Ali and his fighters were integrated into the National Resistance Army, where he was commissioned as a Major General.
He later held several senior government positions, including Minister for Disaster Preparedness and Refugees, Third Deputy Prime Minister, First Deputy Prime Minister and First Deputy Prime Minister.
From 2021 to 2026, he served as Second Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Leader of Government Business in Parliament.
Although he was not reappointed to Cabinet following the 2026 General Elections, Gen Moses Ali retained his seat as Member of Parliament for Adjumani West Constituency.
His continued service in government and Parliament has made him one of Uganda’s longest-serving political figures.
As concern over his health grows, members of the public and political leaders continue to await an official update from his family or doctors regarding his condition.
