DR Congo Ebola Outbreak: Five Patients Recover as Death Toll Nears 250
Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are celebrating a significant milestone after five Ebola patients successfully recovered and were discharged from hospital amid the country’s latest outbreak.
The recoveries come as the ongoing Ebola outbreak continues to pose a major public health challenge, with more than 1,000 suspected cases recorded and at least 246 deaths reported in the DRC.
Four of the recovered patients, all nurses, were officially discharged during a ceremony held in Bunia, the capital of Ituri Province, which remains the epicentre of the outbreak. The first survivor, a laboratory worker, had been discharged days earlier.
Addressing the recovered health workers during a visit to Bunia, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus described them as living proof that the outbreak can be defeated.
The nurses, who contracted the virus while serving on the frontlines, spoke about the emotional and physical challenges they endured while undergoing treatment and isolation.
Health workers remain among the most vulnerable groups during Ebola outbreaks due to their close contact with infected patients. Several medical personnel have reportedly lost their lives while responding to the current crisis.
The DRC’s public health authorities hailed the recoveries as evidence that early detection, effective treatment, contact tracing, and community engagement are helping save lives.
Authorities Urge Communities to Cooperate
Health officials continue to emphasize the importance of seeking medical care immediately after developing Ebola symptoms, noting that timely treatment significantly improves survival chances.
The World Health Organization and the Congolese government have also appealed for stronger cooperation from local communities following incidents in which some residents resisted public health measures, including safe burial protocols designed to prevent further transmission of the virus.
Officials say community trust remains critical to controlling the outbreak, particularly in affected regions of Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu provinces.
Uganda Reports Ebola Cases
The outbreak has also spread beyond the DRC. In neighboring Uganda, health authorities have confirmed nine Ebola cases and one death linked to the current outbreak.
Despite the health emergency, daily life continues in many affected areas. Schools, markets, and businesses remain open in Bunia as residents attempt to balance public health concerns with normal economic activities.
No Approved Vaccine for Current Ebola Strain
The current outbreak is the 17th Ebola outbreak recorded in the DRC and is caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the virus. Unlike some previous Ebola variants, there is currently no approved vaccine specifically targeting this strain, although research and development efforts are ongoing.
Meanwhile, health authorities in Brazil are investigating two suspected Ebola cases reported in São Paulo state, while protests have emerged in Kenya over plans to establish an Ebola quarantine facility for American citizens at a military air base.
Public health experts continue to urge regular hand hygiene, prompt medical attention for suspected symptoms, and the sharing of accurate information as key measures in preventing further spread of the disease.
The World Health Organization and the Congolese government say continued vigilance and community participation will be essential to bringing the outbreak under control.
