Katikkiro Mayiga Inspects Final Restoration Works at Kasubi Royal Tombs
KAMPALA, Uganda — Buganda Kingdom Prime Minister Charles Peter Mayiga has inspected the final restoration works at the Kasubi Royal Tombs, expressing satisfaction with the progress as preparations continue for the official reopening of the historic cultural site.
The inspection marks another major milestone in the restoration of one of Buganda’s most treasured heritage sites, which has undergone years of reconstruction following the devastating fire that destroyed the main mausoleum in 2010.
Final Preparations Underway
During the inspection, Katikkiro Mayiga toured different sections of the Kasubi Royal Tombs to assess the quality and progress of the remaining restoration works.
He commended the engineers, conservation experts, artisans and all stakeholders involved in preserving the site’s unique architectural and cultural heritage.
Mayiga said the restoration project reflects Buganda Kingdom’s commitment to protecting its history and ensuring future generations continue to appreciate the kingdom’s rich cultural legacy.
UNESCO World Heritage Site
The Kasubi Royal Tombs are one of Uganda’s most important cultural landmarks and are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The site serves as the burial ground for several Buganda kings (Kabakas) and remains a significant spiritual and cultural destination for the Buganda Kingdom.
Following the 2010 fire, restoration efforts have been carried out using traditional building techniques while incorporating modern conservation standards to preserve the authenticity of the monument.
Cultural Heritage Preserved
Kingdom officials say the reconstruction has prioritized maintaining the original design, materials and craftsmanship that make the Kasubi Royal Tombs a globally recognized cultural treasure.
The restoration has involved local craftsmen skilled in traditional architecture, ensuring the rebuilt structures remain faithful to Buganda’s cultural identity.
Reopening Expected Soon
With the restoration now in its final stages, preparations are underway for the official reopening of the Kasubi Royal Tombs.
The completion of the project is expected to restore full access to the site for cultural ceremonies, pilgrims, tourists and researchers, while boosting cultural tourism in Uganda.
Buganda Kingdom leaders have described the restoration as a symbol of resilience and a significant achievement in safeguarding one of Africa’s most important heritage sites for future generations.
