Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi’s Whereabouts Unknown After Reported Re-Arrest
The whereabouts of National Unity Platform (NUP) Vice President for Buganda, Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, remain unknown after he was reportedly re-arrested while travelling from Butambala District to Kampala, prompting concern from his family and legal team.
By the time of publication, security agencies had not publicly confirmed his detention or disclosed where he was being held.
Lawyers, Family Search for Kivumbi
Kivumbi’s lawyers and relatives say they have searched several police stations, including Mpigi Police Station and the Uganda Police Headquarters in Naguru, but have been unable to establish his whereabouts.
According to his lawyer, Samuel Muyizzi, authorities at the stations they visited denied having Kivumbi in custody.
“We searched the police in Mpigi, along the highway up to the Police headquarters, and they have denied arresting Kivumbi,” Muyizzi said.
The lack of official information has heightened concerns over the former Butambala County MP’s whereabouts following his reported arrest.
Reportedly Arrested in Mpigi After Bail
Witnesses said Kivumbi was intercepted in Mpigi Town Council shortly after being released on temporary bail by the High Court.
According to accounts from those present, armed operatives wearing police uniforms, military fatigues and civilian clothing allegedly stopped his vehicle, removed him and placed him into an unmarked “drone” van before driving away.
The destination of the vehicle has not been confirmed.
Lawyers Raise Questions Over Alleged Military Involvement
Muyizzi said the legal team has received unverified reports suggesting the vehicles involved in the operation were later seen in Mbuya, leading to speculation that Kivumbi could have been taken to a military facility.
However, he stressed that the reports had not been independently verified.
“Unconfirmed reports show that he was driven to Mbuya,” Muyizzi said.
He added that if the reports prove accurate, the circumstances would raise legal questions.
“If this is true, then it’s also illegal because we don’t know that the military should be carrying out arrests and later detain people,” he said.
Lawyers Plan to Seek Habeas Corpus
Kivumbi’s legal team says it is waiting for an official explanation from the authorities regarding his reported detention.
If no information is provided, the lawyers intend to file a writ of habeas corpus before the High Court, asking the court to order the government and relevant security agencies to produce Kivumbi and explain the legal basis for his detention.
“Our position is very simple. We shall process the necessary documents and run to court seeking a writ of habeas corpus. We want the court to compel the military, the Uganda Police and the government to produce Kivumbi and explain his detention,” Muyizzi said.
Re-Arrest Comes After High Court Bail
Kivumbi had been granted temporary bail by the High Court after spending several months on remand over terrorism-related charges.
He and several co-accused have consistently denied the allegations, maintaining that the charges are politically motivated.
According to his lawyers, Kivumbi had been working to secure the release of other co-accused persons who remain in custody at the time of his reported re-arrest.
Authorities Yet to Comment
As of publication, neither the Uganda Police Force nor the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) had issued an official statement confirming Kivumbi’s reported arrest or revealing where he is being held.
The absence of official communication has fueled concern among his family, legal representatives and supporters, who continue to demand clarity about his whereabouts.
