Obed Mugwisa, Prime Suspect in Rugby Star Sydney Gongodyo Killing, Arrested

Obed Mugwisa Arrested as Prime Suspect in Fatal Mob Attack on Rugby Star Sydney Gongodyo

KAMPALA, Uganda — Police investigations into the killing of Uganda Rugby Cranes and Stanbic Black Pirates player Sydney Gongodyo have taken a significant turn following the arrest of Obed Mugwisa, the man widely identified as the prime suspect in the fatal mob attack.

Sources confirmed that Mugwisa was arrested on Tuesday evening, June 9, 2026, by security personnel after investigators and online video footage linked him to the violent assault that claimed the life of the 27-year-old rugby star.

Mugwisa, a boda boda rider who operates along Frobel Road near the Shree Kutch Satsang Swaminarayan Temple in Ntinda’s Nsimbiziwoome Zone, is alleged to be the individual seen striking Gongodyo with a wooden plank during the attack.

His arrest reportedly occurred around 6:00 p.m., coinciding with the burial of Gongodyo in Mbale District, where family members, friends, and members of the rugby fraternity gathered to pay their final respects.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala, Mugwisa was apprehended in Nsimbiziwoome Zone, not far from his usual area of operation. However, police had not issued a detailed official statement regarding the arrest by the time of publication.

Rugby Community Demands Justice

Gongodyo died on June 5, 2026, after suffering severe injuries during a mob attack in Bukoto, a suburb of Kampala. He was rushed to Mulago National Referral Hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The tragic death sparked widespread outrage across Uganda, with sports leaders, politicians, entertainers, and human rights advocates condemning the growing trend of mob justice.

Investigators believe Gongodyo was attacked after being wrongly accused of involvement in a handbag snatching incident. Authorities are working to establish the exact sequence of events that led to the deadly assault.

Multiple Arrests Made

Police have already arrested several suspects in connection with the case, all of whom are being held at Kira Road Police Station as investigations continue.

Those arrested include Noordin Ssebagala, Roden Ayebazibwe, Juliet Namukose, Elly Mondoni, Herbert Twinomujuni, Perigrino Katsigazi, Darious Tayebwa, and Hannington Tugume.

According to police, the arrests form part of ongoing efforts to identify everyone involved in the attack and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

CCTV Footage Raises Questions

Meanwhile, CCTV footage circulating on social media has intensified public interest in the case. The footage reportedly shows a separate street robbery incident in which a man snatches a woman’s handbag before fleeing on a motorcycle.

The video also captures a bystander approaching the scene as the victim calls for help, prompting debate about whether the footage is directly connected to the events that led to Gongodyo’s death.

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the CCTV footage forms part of the evidence in the ongoing investigation or relates to a separate incident.

Rugby Union Mourns Fallen Star

Uganda Rugby Union President Godwin Kayangwe described Gongodyo’s death as a monumental loss to Ugandan rugby, noting that the tragedy shocked the sporting community and led to the postponement of a Uganda Rugby Premiership semi-final fixture.

As investigations progress, public attention remains focused on Mugwisa’s arrest and the possibility of formal charges being brought against him and other suspects linked to the fatal attack.

The case continues to fuel calls for stronger action against mob justice and greater public awareness about the dangers of taking the law into one’s own hands.
