Police Target Reckless Driving and Criminal Activity
The deadly crash renewed public scrutiny of the “Abasayika” group, which residents have long associated with dangerous driving, street racing, traffic offences, and alleged criminal conduct.
According to police spokesperson Lameck Kigozi, the ongoing operation has so far resulted in the seizure of 15 vehicles and the arrest of all drivers linked to the impounded cars.
“Every vehicle that was impounded has a driver who has already been arrested. Several suspects have since been remanded to Mityana Government Prison as investigations continue,” Kigozi said.
He noted that the operation was aimed at restoring discipline on the roads and addressing increasing complaints from members of the public regarding reckless driving and disregard for traffic laws.
Subaru and Toyota Mark X Vehicles Among Those Impounded
Mityana Traffic Officer Francis Natukwasa revealed that many of the seized vehicles were Subaru and Toyota Mark X models, which authorities say are commonly associated with members of the group.
Natukwasa said several drivers were found operating without valid driving documents, while others were arrested for committing various traffic offences.
“We shall continue enforcing the law to ensure road safety and protect all road users,” he said.
Leaders Warn Against Shielding Suspects
The crackdown has also brought renewed attention to allegations that some influential individuals have been protecting members of the group from law enforcement action.
Local leaders accused unnamed officials of benefiting from the youths’ activities, making it difficult for security agencies to effectively deal with the problem.
Mityana Deputy Resident District Commissioner Prossy Mwanjuzi warned that both gang members and anyone found shielding them would face legal consequences.
“No one should think they are above the law. Leaders who are protecting wrong elements will also be held accountable. We want this group dismantled and order restored in Mityana,” Mwanjuzi said.
She emphasized that security agencies remain committed to dismantling criminal networks operating within the district and restoring public confidence in law enforcement.
Residents Demand Answers
The “Abasayika” group is largely composed of youths aged between 17 and 25 years. Residents have repeatedly questioned the source of the group’s apparent wealth, noting that many members drive expensive vehicles and maintain lifestyles that seem inconsistent with their known sources of income.
As investigations continue, residents hope the latest crackdown will improve road safety, reduce criminal activity, and bring lasting order to Mityana’s roads and communities.
