Kalangala Woman MP Hellen Nakimuli Dies After Surgery as Parliament Releases Burial Program
Kampala, Uganda — The Woman Member of Parliament for Kalangala District, Hellen Nakimuli, has died following a reported unsuccessful surgery for fibroids at Alexandria Medical Centre, a private facility specializing in women’s healthcare.
Nakimuli passed away in the early hours of Sunday, April 19, 2026. Her body was later transferred to Mulago National Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
News of her passing has sparked grief and shock among supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP), where she was regarded as a committed and outspoken leader. Party officials described her as a dedicated public servant who will be remembered for her courage, humility, and steadfast service to the people of Kalangala.
Nakimuli had recently been re-elected during the 2026 general elections, securing a second term in Parliament.
Parliament Announces Week-Long Burial Program
In an official statement issued on Monday, April 20, 2026, Speaker Anita Annet Among expressed “profound sadness” over Nakimuli’s death and unveiled a week-long program to honor her life and service.
According to the schedule, funeral rites began on Monday with official ceremonies. Following the release of the postmortem report, Nakimuli’s body is expected to be transported to Kalangala District via Entebbe, with a ferry departure scheduled for 2:00 PM.
On Tuesday, April 21, local leaders and residents in Kalangala will hold a special district council session and public viewing to pay their respects. Later in the day, the body will be returned to Kampala for an overnight vigil at her family home in Namungona Zone, Lubaga Division.
On Wednesday, April 22, Parliament will host a formal tribute where Nakimuli’s body will lie in state. A second tribute will take place at the National Unity Platform headquarters, followed by another vigil at her residence in Namungona.
Final rites are scheduled for Thursday, April 23, with a requiem mass at Namungona Orthodox Church. She will later be laid to rest in Luwero District.
Nakimuli’s death marks a significant loss to both her constituents and Uganda’s political landscape, as tributes continue to pour in from leaders and citizens across the country.
