A controversial 1960 scientific paper predicted a dramatic population-driven crisis in 2026. As the world population continues to grow, the decades-old theory has resurfaced—but modern population projections tell a more complicated story.

Predictions about the end of civilization have fascinated the public for centuries, from warnings about resource shortages to concerns over nuclear war, climate change and artificial intelligence.

One particularly striking prediction dates back to 1960, when researchers at the University of Illinois published a study examining the mathematical relationship between population growth and the future of human civilization.

The researchers—Heinz von Foerster, Patricia M. Mora and Lawrence W. Amiot—argued that continued population growth could eventually push humanity toward a catastrophic point.

Their paper, published in the journal Science, became associated with a specific date: November 13, 2026.

But with that date now approaching, what did the researchers actually predict, and how does their theory compare with what scientists know about global population today?

The 1960 Doomsday Prediction

When the study was published, the global population was approximately 3 billion people. More than six decades later, the world’s population has grown to more than 8 billion.

The researchers used mathematical models to examine historical population growth and suggested that, if existing trends continued indefinitely, humanity could eventually reach an extreme population threshold.

Their prediction was based primarily on population growth, rather than a specific war, climate disaster or technological catastrophe.

The idea was straightforward: exponential population growth cannot continue forever on a finite planet.

However, an important distinction is necessary. The 1960 study was a mathematical extrapolation based on population trends at the time. It was not a scientifically established timetable proving that civilization would end on a particular day.

Why the 2026 Date Has Returned to the Spotlight

The prediction has attracted renewed attention because November 13, 2026 is now within sight.

That has led to headlines suggesting that the world could be approaching an imminent population-driven doomsday.

But population growth has not followed the same trajectory anticipated by many earlier models.

Fertility rates have fallen dramatically in numerous countries, particularly as societies have urbanized, incomes and education levels have changed, and access to healthcare and contraception has expanded.

As a result, modern demographic projections paint a very different picture of humanity’s population trajectory.

The World Population Is Still Growing—But More Slowly

The global population is currently above 8 billion, but the rate at which it is growing has slowed substantially compared with previous decades.

According to the United Nations, the global population is projected to reach approximately 10.3 billion during the 2080s, before reaching a peak and gradually declining toward the end of the century under the UN’s medium projection.

That is significantly different from the idea that population growth will continue accelerating indefinitely.

The change is largely connected to declining fertility rates.

In many parts of the world, families are having fewer children than previous generations, while people are living longer. These demographic changes are reshaping the world’s population structure.

Could Overpopulation Still Become a Problem?

The slowdown in population growth does not mean population-related challenges have disappeared.

Population size is only one part of the equation. Consumption patterns, resource distribution, technology, economic development and environmental pressures also determine how much strain human societies place on the planet.

A growing population can increase demand for:

  • Food and agricultural land

  • Fresh water

  • Energy

  • Housing

  • Transportation

  • Raw materials

  • Healthcare and infrastructure

At the same time, the environmental impact of an individual can vary considerably depending on where they live and how much they consume.

This makes the modern debate around population considerably more complicated than simply asking whether there are “too many people.”

The Malthusian Warning

Concerns about population growth are far older than the 1960 study.

In 1798, British economist Thomas Robert Malthus published An Essay on the Principle of Population. He argued that population could grow faster than humanity’s ability to produce food.

Malthus believed unchecked population growth would eventually result in shortages, famine and increased mortality.

His theory became one of the most influential—and controversial—ideas in the history of population studies.

Yet technological progress subsequently transformed global agriculture.

Advances in farming techniques, crop varieties, irrigation, fertilizers, mechanization and food distribution enabled agricultural production to increase dramatically.

Humanity therefore did not experience the global food collapse predicted by some interpretations of Malthus’s original argument.

The Scientist Who Warned About AI

Heinz von Foerster, one of the researchers behind the 1960 study, also wrote and spoke about artificial intelligence and the assumptions people make about machines.

Decades before AI became part of everyday life, von Foerster questioned whether machines performing tasks associated with intelligence should necessarily be considered intelligent in the same way humans are.

His observations have taken on new relevance as artificial intelligence systems have become capable of generating text, producing images, solving problems and interacting conversationally with users.

However, connecting his earlier philosophical observations about AI directly to today’s generative AI systems requires caution. The technology has evolved considerably since his discussions in the 20th century.

Population Growth vs. Climate Change

The renewed discussion surrounding the 1960 prediction also raises a broader question: what represents the greater long-term risk to civilization—population growth or climate change?

There is no simple scientific answer that allows the two issues to be treated as competing doomsday clocks.

Population growth can increase demand for resources, while climate change can affect food production, water availability, ecosystems, infrastructure and human health.

At the same time, technological innovation, changes in consumption, renewable energy, improved agricultural productivity and demographic shifts can alter future outcomes.

Consequently, modern scientific assessments generally focus on multiple interacting factors rather than identifying a single event or variable that will determine humanity’s fate.

Is the World Really Heading for Doomsday in 2026?

There is no scientific consensus that civilization will end in 2026 because of overpopulation.

The November 13, 2026 date comes from the mathematical extrapolation associated with the 1960 paper. Population growth since then has not continued along the same trajectory indefinitely.

Today’s demographic projections instead indicate that global population growth is slowing and is expected to eventually reverse.

That does not make population pressures irrelevant. It does, however, mean that the 2026 date should be understood as a historical prediction rather than an established scientific deadline for the end of civilization.

What the Future of Humanity May Actually Look Like

The more interesting lesson from the 1960 prediction may not be its specific date, but the limitations of extrapolating historical trends indefinitely.

Demographic patterns can change.

Technological development can change.

Economic conditions can change.

And human behavior can change.

The world’s population has grown enormously since the researchers published their study, but fertility rates have also fallen in many regions, altering the trajectory scientists now expect.

Rather than a predetermined population doomsday, the coming decades are likely to involve a complex combination of demographic change, resource management, technological innovation and environmental challenges.

The 1960 prediction remains a fascinating example of how scientists once attempted to calculate humanity’s future. But it should not be mistaken for evidence that the world is scheduled to end in November 2026.
