Uganda Rugby Cranes Player Killed by Mob, Police Launch Investigation

Police in Kampala have launched investigations into the death of Uganda Rugby Cranes player Sydney Gongodyo, who was fatally attacked by a mob in Nakawa Division under circumstances that remain unclear.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Racheal Kawala, the incident occurred at around 2:00 p.m. on Friday in Masulira Zone, Bukoto I Parish, Nakawa Division, Kampala District.

Police said Gongodyo, who also played for Stanbic Black Pirates Rugby Club, was allegedly subjected to mob violence by members of the public. The motive behind the attack has not yet been established.

“It is alleged that while in Masulira Zone, the victim was subjected to mob action by members of the public under circumstances that are still under investigation,” Kawala said.

Officers responded to the scene and rushed the injured rugby player to Mulago National Referral Hospital for treatment. However, despite efforts by medical personnel, Gongodyo succumbed to his injuries later that evening.

“Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital on June 5, 2026, at approximately 7:00 p.m.,” Kawala added.

Police have since opened a full investigation into the incident and are working to determine what led to the attack.

Authorities said efforts are underway to identify and arrest those responsible for the mob action.

“Investigations into the incident are ongoing. Efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the suspects involved so that they can be brought to justice,” police said in a statement.

The death of Gongodyo has sent shockwaves through Uganda’s rugby fraternity, with teammates, fans, and sports stakeholders mourning the loss of one of the country’s promising rugby talents.

Gongodyo was a key member of the Stanbic Black Pirates side that enjoyed a successful campaign last season, helping the club secure both the Uganda Rugby Premiership and the Uganda Cup titles.

His death has reignited concerns over mob justice in Uganda, with leaders and sports enthusiasts calling for swift investigations and accountability for those involved.

Police have urged members of the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and instead report suspected criminal activities to security agencies for proper handling.

Further details are expected as investigations continue.
