14 People Killed in Fatal Crash on Kampala–Masaka Highway in Lwera Swamp

Fourteen people have been killed in a tragic road accident in Lwera Swamp, Kalungu District, along the Kampala–Masaka Highway, police have confirmed.

The fatal crash occurred at around 11:00 p.m. on August 3, 2026, near Kamunga Trading Centre, leaving 14 passengers dead at the scene.

Taxi and Sand Truck Collide in Lwera

According to police, the crash involved a Toyota Hiace taxi, registration number UA 662AQ, and a Sino truck, registration number UBS 040F, which was reportedly transporting sand.

Kasirye Twaha, the Regional Police Spokesperson for Greater Masaka, said all 14 people who died were occupants of the taxi.

The victims reportedly died at the scene following the collision.

Four Injured in Kampala–Masaka Highway Crash

Four other people sustained injuries in the accident and were rushed to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for medical treatment.

Police said two of the injured victims were occupants of the taxi, while the other two were travelling in the truck.

The circumstances that led to the collision remain under investigation.

Police Search for Fleeing Driver

Police have launched investigations into the deadly crash as efforts continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

Authorities are also reportedly pursuing the driver who allegedly fled the scene following the accident.

The crash has renewed concerns about road safety along the Kampala–Masaka Highway, one of Uganda’s major transport corridors, particularly at night when visibility can be reduced and heavy commercial vehicles share the road with passenger taxis.

The deaths add to concerns over road crashes in Uganda, with passenger vehicles and heavy trucks frequently using major highways connecting Kampala to different parts of the country.

Police and road safety authorities continue to urge motorists to observe speed limits, maintain safe following distances and exercise extra caution when driving at night.

As investigations continue, the identities of the deceased and further details about the circumstances of the crash are expected to be released by authorities
