France booked their place in the FIFA World Cup semi-finals after a convincing 2-0 victory over Morocco, with Kylian Mbappé bouncing back from a missed penalty to inspire Didier Deschamps’ side to another impressive win.
The French captain recovered from an early setback to score his eighth goal of the tournament before Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé sealed the victory as France continued their march toward a third World Cup title.
Mbappé Redeems Himself After Penalty Miss
France dominated much of the quarter-final clash and nearly opened the scoring early when Mbappé tested Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou with a powerful long-range effort.
The breakthrough seemed destined to come before halftime when Mbappé won a penalty after being fouled by defender Noussair Mazraoui.
However, Bounou guessed correctly and comfortably saved the Real Madrid forward’s tame spot-kick, keeping Morocco level heading into the second half.
France Finally Break Through
France continued to pile pressure on the Moroccan defence after the restart, and their persistence paid off in the 60th minute.
Mbappé collected the ball just inside the penalty area before curling a superb finish into the far corner, leaving Bounou with no chance and handing France a deserved lead.
Just six minutes later, Dembélé doubled the advantage after driving through the Moroccan backline and firing a low shot that squeezed past Bounou despite the goalkeeper getting a hand to the ball.
The quick-fire double effectively ended Morocco’s hopes of a comeback.
Mbappé Moves Level with Messi
The goal marked Mbappé’s eighth of the tournament, drawing him level with Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot.
However, the French star now leads the scoring standings thanks to his superior assist tally.
Mbappé also moved closer to becoming the FIFA World Cup’s all-time leading scorer. The 27-year-old now has 20 World Cup goals, just one behind Messi’s record of 21.
Morocco Struggle to Trouble France
Morocco, who reached the quarter-finals after an impressive campaign, found it difficult to break down the disciplined French defence.
They managed only five attempts throughout the match and registered just one shot on target, which came in the 83rd minute after France had already established a two-goal cushion.
Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou was one of Morocco’s standout performers despite the defeat, producing several important saves, including Mbappé’s penalty.
France Strengthen Their Title Credentials
France have now won six consecutive matches in the tournament and have scored 16 goals in six games, making them the competition’s highest-scoring side.
The two-time world champions, who lifted the trophy in 1998 and 2018, continue to reinforce their status as one of the favourites to win the tournament.
The only concern for Didier Deschamps came when Mbappé was substituted in the 77th minute with ice applied to his right ankle. However, the forward appeared to ease fears of a serious injury by celebrating enthusiastically with teammates after the final whistle.
France will now face either Spain or Belgium in the FIFA World Cup semi-final in Dallas as they continue their pursuit of another global title.
