Businessman Dies in Fatal Mbale City Truck Accident

Police in Mbale City have launched investigations into a tragic road accident that claimed the life of a 55-year-old businessman after he was crushed by a truck along Tororo Road.

The deceased has been identified as James Watawa, a resident of Buwodada Village in Sironko District.

According to Elgon Region Police spokesperson SP Rogers Taitika, the fatal crash occurred on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at around 9:55 a.m., opposite Police Children School in Wanyera Cell, Mbale City.

How the Accident Happened

Preliminary police investigations indicate that Watawa was riding a white Kawasaki motorcycle, registration number UGD 997A, and had stopped near the Kaguta Road junction while waiting for oncoming traffic to clear before making a turn.

Police say a speeding motorcycle approaching from the opposite direction allegedly struck Watawa, causing him to lose balance and fall into the path of an oncoming white HOWO truck, registration number UBN 667Y, which was travelling from the Sleeping Baby Roundabout.

The truck ran over the businessman, killing him instantly at the scene.

Truck Driver Flees the Scene

Following the collision, the driver of the truck reportedly fled before police arrived.

Officers from Mbale Central Police Station (CPS) responded to the scene, documented the crash, and transported Watawa’s body to the mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Police have since impounded both the truck and the motorcycle involved in the accident. The vehicles are being held at the Mbale CPS yard pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV) as part of the ongoing investigation.

Police Appeal for Road Safety

Police have appealed to motorists, truck drivers, and boda boda riders to exercise greater caution while using the roads.

Authorities urged all road users to obey traffic regulations, avoid speeding, and remain vigilant at junctions to help reduce the growing number of fatal road accidents across the country.

Investigations are continuing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the crash and to trace the truck driver who fled the scene.
