BREAKING: Jacob Oboth Oboth Elected Speaker of Uganda’s 12th Parliament
Members of Parliament sitting in the first session of Uganda’s 12th Parliament have elected Hon. Jacob Oboth Oboth Markson as the new Speaker of Parliament.
Oboth Oboth secured a landslide victory after polling 441 votes, defeating National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Paul Mwiru, who garnered 60 votes, and Democratic Party (DP) president Norbert Mao, who received 15 votes.
The election took place during the inaugural sitting of the 12th Parliament on Monday, May 25, 2026, at Parliament in Kampala.
Following his victory, Rt. Hon. Jacob Oboth Oboth immediately took the oath of office at exactly 1:30 PM before officially assuming his new role as Speaker of Parliament.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni later handed over the official instruments of Parliament to the newly elected Speaker. These included the Parliamentary Mace, the Uganda National Flag, the Coat of Arms, the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, a copy of the Rules of Procedure of Parliament, and the Speaker’s ceremonial robes.
The Speaker election was presided over by Chief Justice Hon. Justice Dr. Flavian Zeija, who officially declared Jacob Oboth Oboth duly elected after attaining the highest number of votes cast by Members of Parliament.
According to the final tally, the election also recorded three spoilt votes.
The election of the Speaker marks a major milestone in the commencement of Uganda’s 12th Parliament, setting the stage for the new legislative term.
