NUP Endorses Paul Mwiru for Speaker of Uganda’s 12th Parliament

The opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) has officially endorsed Paul Mwiru as its candidate for Speaker of Uganda’s 12th Parliament ahead of the new parliamentary term set to begin on May 25, 2026.

The endorsement was announced on Monday during a press briefing held at the party’s headquarters in Kavule by NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya.

Rubongoya criticized what he described as increasing external influence in parliamentary affairs, arguing that Parliament has gradually lost its constitutional independence and oversight role.

According to the party, electing Paul Mwiru as Speaker would help restore institutional integrity, strengthen accountability, and address growing concerns surrounding corruption, political interference, and weakening democratic structures within Parliament.

“NUP believes Parliament must regain its autonomy and effectively represent the interests of Ugandans,” Rubongoya said while expressing confidence in Mwiru’s leadership abilities and parliamentary experience.

The party also pledged to mobilize support for Mwiru’s candidature ahead of the anticipated speakership race in the 12th Parliament.

Paul Mwiru Promises Strong and Independent Parliament

In his acceptance speech, Paul Mwiru said the election of the next Speaker should concern all Ugandans given the lessons learned from the previous Parliament.

“As the chief custodian of the rules and privileges of members, the speakership requires an experienced, exemplary, and patriotic Ugandan like myself,” Mwiru said.

The Jinja South East legislator emphasized that Parliament plays a critical constitutional role in overseeing the Executive, enacting laws, and defending the rule of law on behalf of citizens.

Mwiru argued that the institution requires competent and independent leadership capable of safeguarding parliamentary integrity and promoting accountability in governance.

The race for Speaker of the 12th Parliament is expected to attract significant political attention as parties position themselves ahead of the new parliamentary session.
