A New York couple is “doing great” after welcoming their baby boy on their way to the hospital.

Last week, Nicole Burns, a Rockland County mom of three, told News 12 Westchester that she and her husband, Nick, suddenly welcomed their baby boy, Austin, in the middle of the highway as they attempted to make their way to the hospital for the birth.

“The experience was something that is so hard to put into words,” she tells PEOPLE.

She adds that her water broke at about 1:40 a.m., and her mother arrived to watch the couple’s two older kids around 20 minutes later so that the expectant parents could make their way to the hospital.

Nicole and Nick left at 2:04 a.m. with plans to go to Valley Hospital, but Nicole soon realized there wasn’t enough time, asking her husband to go to nearby Nyack Hospital instead.

“By the time we pulled onto [Route] 59, I had Austin in my hands,” she tells PEOPLE, adding that her “instincts really kicked in as I felt the baby coming.”

She and Nick later met an ambulance at a nearby Dunkin’, where first responders tied Austin’s umbilical cord before escorting the family to the hospital.

“It’s a moment we will never forget, delivering my own child in the front seat of our car, just the three of us together for the first couple of minutes of Austin’s life,” she tells PEOPLE. “Now being home as a family of five, life feels really good!”
