RUBANDA, Uganda – Police in Rubanda District have launched investigations into a fatal road accident that claimed the life of a 32-year-old motorcyclist along the Kabale–Kisoro Highway.
The deceased has been identified as Martin Muhereza, a resident of Muruhita Village in Hamurwa Sub-county, Rubanda District.
According to police, the fatal crash occurred on Monday evening at around 6:00 p.m. in Mukyitenge Village, also located in Hamurwa Sub-county.
Muhereza was riding a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, registration number UMA 129LN, when he reportedly collided with a white low-bed trailer bearing registration number UN 26013.
Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime said preliminary investigations indicate that the motorcyclist was travelling at a high speed and failed to negotiate a corner before crashing into the trailer.
“It’s alleged that the rider, now deceased, was riding at high speed and rammed into the trailer. He died instantly. Traffic Police rushed to the scene and conveyed the body to the mortuary for postmortem,” Tumushime said.
Police officers responded to the scene shortly after the accident and transferred the body for a postmortem examination as investigations into the exact circumstances of the crash continue.
Authorities further revealed that the deceased was not wearing a safety helmet at the time of the accident, a factor that may have contributed to the severity of the injuries sustained.
Following the incident, police renewed calls for motorists, motorcyclists, and other road users to strictly observe traffic regulations and speed limits while using public roads.
“We continue to urge all road users to be mindful of speed limits and respect other road users. Abide by highway codes to avoid such tragedies,” Tumushime added.
Road crashes involving motorcycles remain a major road safety challenge across Uganda. Traffic authorities frequently cite speeding, reckless riding, dangerous overtaking, and failure to wear protective gear as some of the leading causes of motorcycle-related fatalities.
The Kabale–Kisoro Highway is one of the busiest roads in the Kigezi sub-region and has witnessed several serious accidents in recent years, prompting repeated appeals for improved road safety awareness among motorists.
Police say investigations into the fatal crash are ongoing.
