Erias Lukwago’s Wife Demands Opposition Action Following His Arrest

KAMPALA, Uganda – Zawedde Lubwama, the wife of detained opposition politician and lawyer Erias Lukwago, has expressed disappointment over what she describes as the lack of a strong response from opposition leaders following her husband’s arrest.

Speaking a day after Lukwago was taken from his residence in Wakaliga, Kampala, Lubwama questioned why more opposition politicians and Members of Parliament had remained silent about the circumstances surrounding his detention.

She urged opposition leaders across different political parties to unite and collectively defend the rights and freedoms of Ugandans.

“I call upon members of the opposition to unite as brothers and sisters and fight for the rights of our people,” Lubwama said.

“It has been disheartening to see that no one in Parliament is coming out to talk about what has happened to Erias Lukwago.”

According to Lubwama, Lukwago has consistently supported fellow opposition politicians whenever they faced arrest, detention, or political persecution, regardless of their party affiliation.

She noted that throughout his political career, the former Kampala Lord Mayor has often taken an active role in advocating for the rights of detained political actors and seeking solutions on their behalf.

“When one of them is arrested, even if they belong to a different party, he always comes out to inquire and does everything possible to find a solution,” she said.

Her remarks appeared to target not only opposition parties in general but also some of Lukwago’s close political allies, whom she accused of failing to publicly raise concerns about his arrest.

The comments come amid growing anxiety among Lukwago’s family, supporters, and legal team, who continue to seek clarity regarding his whereabouts, welfare, and access to legal representation.

The arrest has sparked widespread debate on social media and within political circles, with some opposition supporters arguing that divisions among opposition groups have weakened their ability to respond collectively when political leaders are detained.

Political analysts say the incident could become a significant test of opposition unity at a time when calls for greater cooperation among Uganda’s opposition parties continue to intensify ahead of future political contests.

Supporters of a united opposition argue that coordinated action is essential whenever political leaders face arrest or alleged rights violations, while critics point to longstanding rivalries that have often hampered joint responses.

Lubwama called on opposition leaders to put aside political differences and focus on defending democratic values, civil liberties, and constitutional rights.

“This is a moment for unity,” she said, adding that the issues surrounding her husband’s arrest extend beyond one individual and touch on broader concerns about justice, human rights, and political freedom in Uganda.

As of publication, authorities had not issued a detailed statement addressing the concerns raised by Lukwago’s family regarding his arrest and detention.

The developments have intensified national discussions about opposition unity, civil liberties, and the treatment of political actors, with supporters continuing to demand greater transparency regarding Lukwago’s status and welfare.
