Police Recover Over 150 Suspected Stolen Phones in Kampala Crackdown, Arrest Key Robbery Suspect

Police have recovered more than 150 suspected stolen mobile phones during a major operation targeting phone theft syndicates and illegal handset trading networks in downtown Kampala.

The Friday operation, conducted across key commercial hubs including KK Trust Plaza, Owino Market, Nakasero, and surrounding areas, led to the arrest of several suspects. Among those apprehended was James Lule, a suspected repeat offender linked to a series of robberies along Namugongo Road and nearby areas.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, the operation is part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks involved in the theft and resale of mobile phones.

Investigation Triggered by Phone Theft Complaint

Police said the crackdown was launched following a complaint filed by a woman whose mobile phone was stolen on June 10, 2026. The victim reported that she recognized the individuals who robbed her along Queen’s Way in Makindye Division.

The case was registered at Katwe Police Division, prompting investigations that led to the arrest of three suspects believed to be involved in multiple robbery and bag-snatching incidents across Kampala.

During interrogation, the suspects allegedly disclosed that the stolen phones had been sold to mobile phone dealers operating in various arcades in the city center.

Joint Security Operation Recovers Hundreds of Devices

Acting on the information gathered, a joint police and military team carried out follow-up operations on Friday, resulting in the recovery of more than 150 suspected stolen mobile phones from different shops and dealers.

“We have arrested several suspects. Some were directly buying stolen phones from criminals, while others unknowingly stocked them after purchasing from suppliers. The recovered phones are being processed to establish ownership, and investigations are ongoing to identify more victims and suspects connected to these crimes,” Owoyesigyire said.

Authorities revealed that all recovered devices will undergo verification procedures to identify their rightful owners.

Police Warn Phone Dealers Against Buying Stolen Devices

Police have urged second-hand phone dealers to exercise caution and verify the source of mobile devices before purchasing them.

Owoyesigyire warned that handling suspected stolen property is a criminal offence and could lead to prosecution.

He emphasized that security agencies remain committed to combating street robberies and dismantling the criminal networks that fuel the illegal phone trade in Kampala.

Illegal Phone Trade Remains a Challenge

Police noted that previous operations conducted in commercial arcades such as Mutaasa Kafeero, City House, Cooper Complex, and other buildings have resulted in the recovery of hundreds of stolen phones.

Despite repeated arrests and seizures, authorities say the illicit market continues to thrive through organized criminal networks that facilitate the sale and distribution of stolen devices.

Suspected Robbery Mastermind Arrested

In a related development, police arrested James Lule shortly after a violent robbery in Nabwojjo, Kyaliwajjala B Zone.

The victim, identified as 23-year-old Daniel Tenywa, a resident of Kiwanga in Mukono District, was reportedly attacked with a blunt object and robbed of his mobile phone.

Investigators linked Lule to the attack and arrested him in Kyaliwajjala Kapeera. Detectives attached to Kira Police Division are continuing efforts to track down his suspected accomplices.

Meanwhile, Tenywa remains hospitalized in critical condition as investigations into the robbery continue.
