At Least 33 People Hospitalized After Bus Crashes into Building, Causing Chain Reaction That Looked Like ‘War Scene’

33 Injured After Maryland Transit Bus Crashes Into Building in Pikesville

More than 30 people were injured after a Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) bus crashed into a building in Pikesville, Baltimore County, on Wednesday evening, triggering a large-scale emergency response.

The crash occurred shortly after 6:00 p.m. on July 8 along the 1500 block of Reisterstown Road, where the bus collided with a commercial building and several other vehicles, prompting authorities to declare a second-alarm mass casualty incident.

Dozens Injured in Multi-Vehicle Collision

According to the Baltimore County Fire Department, at least 33 people were transported to nearby hospitals following the crash.

Emergency officials said one victim was listed in critical condition, while dozens of others suffered injuries of varying severity.

The accident involved multiple civilian vehicles, including one that overturned during the chain-reaction collision. Downed power lines further complicated rescue operations and temporarily created hazardous conditions at the scene.

Rescue Teams Free Trapped Victims

Firefighters and emergency crews worked quickly to rescue victims trapped inside the wreckage.

Officials confirmed that at least two people had to be extricated—one from the bus and another from a passenger vehicle.

By approximately 6:47 p.m., rescue teams had successfully freed the critically injured victim, allowing paramedics to transport them for emergency medical treatment.

More than 100 first responders, including firefighters, police officers and emergency medical personnel, participated in the large-scale rescue operation.

Fire Chief Describes Scene as a “War Zone”

Baltimore County Fire Chief Joseph W. Dixon described the crash scene as resembling a “war scene” because of the extensive damage involving the bus, multiple vehicles and surrounding infrastructure.

Emergency crews remained at the location for several hours clearing debris, treating the injured and securing the area.

Investigation Underway

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine what caused the bus to veer into the building and trigger the series of collisions.

Investigators have not yet announced whether mechanical failure, driver error or another factor contributed to the crash.

The Baltimore County Fire Department, Baltimore County Police Department, and the Maryland Transit Administration have not released additional details as the investigation continues.

Maryland Governor Responds

Maryland Governor Wes Moore said his administration was closely monitoring the incident and coordinating with local authorities to support emergency response efforts.

In a statement shared on social media, the governor expressed sympathy for those affected and thanked first responders for their swift actions.

“Dawn and I are keeping everyone impacted in our hearts and prayers. We are deeply grateful for our first responders who acted with speed and skill to ensure the safety of our neighbors. We’ve been in close coordination with local officials to provide any support needed on the ground,” Moore said.

Authorities Continue Gathering Evidence

Officials are expected to provide additional updates once investigators complete their assessment of the crash scene and determine the circumstances that led to the accident.

The condition of those injured remains under close monitoring as recovery efforts continue.
