Tororo Sub-County Chief Dies in Fatal Road Accident

A senior local government official has died in a tragic road accident along the Tororo–Mbale Highway after a head-on collision involving a truck and a motorcycle.

The deceased has been identified as Emmanuel Obol, 55, the Sub-County Chief of Akadot in Tororo District. He was also a resident of Nyakesi C Village in Nyangole Sub-county.

The fatal crash occurred on the afternoon of Thursday, July 9, 2026, on one of eastern Uganda’s busiest highways.

Careless Overtaking Blamed for Crash

According to police, the accident involved an Isuzu Forward truck (registration UBK 887W) and a Bajaj Boxer motorcycle (registration UDR 902C) ridden by Obol.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the Isuzu Forward was travelling from Tororo towards Mbale when its driver attempted to overtake another vehicle moving in the same direction.

During the overtaking manoeuvre, the truck reportedly crossed into the opposite lane, where it collided head-on with the motorcycle being ridden by Obol, who was travelling from the opposite direction.

The impact of the collision left the Sub-County Chief with severe head injuries, and he died instantly at the scene.

Police Launch Investigation

Bukedi South Regional Police spokesperson IP Moses Johnson Mugwe said preliminary findings point to reckless overtaking as the likely cause of the fatal accident.

“Our preliminary findings attribute the cause of the accident to careless overtaking by the driver of motor vehicle UBK 887W, an Isuzu Forward,” Mugwe said.

Police have launched investigations to establish the full circumstances surrounding the crash.

Body Taken for Postmortem

The body of Emmanuel Obol was transported to Tororo Municipal Mortuary, where a postmortem examination will be conducted.

Meanwhile, both the Isuzu Forward truck and the Bajaj Boxer motorcycle were towed to the Central Police Station (CPS) Tororo for inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles as part of the ongoing investigation.

Police Urge Road Safety

Following the fatal crash, police appealed to motorists, motorcyclists and other road users to observe traffic regulations and exercise caution while travelling.

Mugwe urged drivers to avoid dangerous overtaking and adhere to road safety rules to prevent similar tragedies.

“We urge all road users to exercise due care while using the roads and to respect all road safety precautions, signs and regulations,” he said.

He warned that anyone found violating the Traffic and Road Safety Act would face arrest and prosecution.

Renewed Concerns Over Road Safety

The latest accident adds to growing concerns over road safety on Uganda’s highways, where reckless overtaking remains one of the leading causes of fatal crashes.

Police continue to urge motorists to remain patient while driving and to avoid risky manoeuvres that endanger the lives of other road users.
