Two Killed in Violent Kigoogwa Mob Attack as Police Probe Land Dispute
KAMPALA, Uganda — Police in Matugga Division have launched investigations into a violent mob justice incident that left two suspected criminals dead after residents of Kigoogwa Village in Gombe Division, Nansana Municipality, allegedly attacked them following a daytime raid on a local home.
The incident occurred when a group of men armed with machetes and other weapons reportedly stormed the residence of Ssenyonjo Godfrey Muwanga, triggering panic among residents.
According to eyewitness accounts, the suspects moved through the village threatening residents and restricting movement in some parts of the area, causing widespread fear.
The situation escalated after one of the suspected attackers allegedly attempted to assault a resident with a machete. Enraged residents reportedly fought back, chasing and attacking the suspects.
One suspect was killed at the scene, while others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Mulago National Referral Hospital. Police later confirmed that another suspect succumbed to injuries, bringing the death toll to two.
Residents said the suspects were travelling in a Toyota Mark II registration number UAP 343W, which reportedly bore markings associated with Benson Property Consultant.
When journalists visited the area following the incident, tension remained high as residents expressed concerns over security and growing mistrust of unfamiliar individuals entering the community. The house believed to have been at the centre of the conflict showed visible signs of damage and had been reinforced with wooden supports.
Ssenyonjo claimed the attack was the fourth incident targeting his home and accused Matugga Police of failing to respond adequately despite multiple complaints.
“This is now the fourth time they are attacking my home, but whenever we report to police, nothing is done. We have been abandoned,” he said.
He further alleged that a relative identified as Namusisi was connected to ongoing attacks and longstanding land disputes involving the family.
According to Ssenyonjo, tensions escalated after important property documents allegedly disappeared amid contested financial transactions linked to the disputed land.
Another resident, Catherine Nalubwama, criticized police for allegedly failing to act on earlier complaints, arguing that community frustration contributed to the outbreak of mob violence.
“The police ignored these repeated attacks, and residents eventually became frustrated. That is how the situation got out of hand,” Nalubwama said.
She also accused Namusisi of repeatedly summoning family members to various police stations but allegedly failing to appear when required to clarify issues surrounding the dispute.
Residents say the area has experienced years of family disagreements and land wrangles, but recent developments have intensified tensions and raised security concerns.
Local Council One Chairperson Joseph Ssekumba said he was away when the violence occurred and only learned of the incident after the suspects had already been assaulted.
“I appeal to all parties to resolve these conflicts peacefully instead of creating fear and insecurity within the community,” Ssekumba said.
He also urged law enforcement agencies to intervene decisively to prevent further escalation.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachel Kawala confirmed that one suspect has been arrested to assist investigators and is currently being held at Matugga Police Station.
Police say investigations into the mob justice incident, the alleged attack, and the underlying land dispute remain ongoing.
