KAMPALA, Uganda — The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has issued a stern warning to musicians and event organizers against using concert stages to spread offensive, inflammatory, or inappropriate messages, emphasizing that entertainment platforms should be used responsibly.
The regulator said concert venues are licensed for entertainment purposes and should not be transformed into platforms for personal attacks, hate speech, incitement, or content that violates Uganda’s communication and broadcasting standards.
UCC Calls for Responsible Use of Public Platforms
According to the Commission, musicians wield significant influence over their audiences and therefore have a responsibility to ensure that their performances promote positive values and respect for the law.
UCC warned that public events attracting large crowds can easily shape public opinion, making it important for performers to exercise caution in their remarks while on stage.
The Commission stressed that freedom of expression should be exercised within the framework of Uganda’s laws and regulations governing public communication.
Warning Follows Recent Concert Controversies
The warning comes amid growing debate over comments made by some artists during recent concerts, where musicians have used performance platforms to address political, personal, and social issues.
Several incidents in recent months have sparked public discussion after artists made controversial statements during live performances, prompting concerns from regulators and stakeholders in the entertainment industry.
UCC noted that while artists have the right to express themselves creatively, they should avoid statements that may incite violence, spread misinformation, defame individuals, or undermine public order.
Event Organizers Also Put on Notice
The communications regulator reminded concert promoters and event organizers that they also bear responsibility for ensuring events comply with existing laws and licensing conditions.
Organizers were urged to work closely with relevant authorities to guarantee that concerts remain safe, professional, and focused on entertainment.
The Commission warned that failure to comply with regulatory requirements could result in sanctions, including penalties and other enforcement measures as provided by law.
Balancing Creativity and Responsibility
Industry observers say the warning highlights the ongoing challenge of balancing artistic freedom with responsible public communication.
As Uganda’s entertainment sector continues to grow, regulators, artists, and promoters are increasingly being called upon to ensure that concert stages remain spaces for creativity, cultural expression, and positive engagement with audiences.
