Police Destroy Suspected Opium Gardens, Arrest Suspect in Koboko Anti-Drug Operation

KOBOKO, Uganda – Police in Koboko District have stepped up efforts to combat illegal drug cultivation after a joint intelligence-led operation led to the destruction of suspected opium gardens and the arrest of a suspect in Ludara Sub-county.

The operation was conducted by officers under the command of Koboko District Police Commander SP Michael Masereka, working closely with the office of the Koboko District LC V Chairperson. Security personnel targeted areas believed to be involved in the cultivation of opium, a prohibited narcotic substance under Ugandan law.

During the operation, authorities uprooted several suspected opium gardens in Ludara Sub-county and arrested one suspect identified as Ratib Haruna, a resident of Modo Village in Bamure Parish.

Police said Haruna is currently being detained at Koboko Central Police Station and is assisting investigators with inquiries related to the illegal cultivation of narcotic substances.

Police Intensify Fight Against Illegal Drug Cultivation

Speaking on the operation, West Nile Regional Police Public Relations Officer SSP Josephine Angucia said the crackdown is part of ongoing efforts to eliminate the cultivation, production, distribution, and consumption of illegal drugs across the region.

“We conducted an intelligence-led operation in Ludara Sub-county and successfully destroyed gardens where opium was being cultivated. One suspect was arrested and is helping police with investigations,” Angucia said.

She emphasized that security agencies remain committed to enforcing anti-narcotics laws and warned individuals involved in the illegal drug trade that more operations will be carried out across Koboko District and the wider West Nile region.

Public Warned Against Illegal Drug Activities

Angucia reminded the public that the production, possession, sale, and consumption of opium by private individuals are illegal under Ugandan law and carry serious legal consequences.

“Anyone found engaging in the cultivation, sale, possession, or consumption of opium will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law,” she warned.

The police spokesperson also called upon local leaders and community members to support law enforcement agencies by reporting suspected cases of drug cultivation, trafficking, and abuse.

“We encourage the public to share information with police regarding the growing, sale, or possession of opium and other illegal drugs. Community cooperation is essential in protecting people from the harmful effects of narcotic substances,” Angucia added.

Investigations Ongoing

Police confirmed that investigations into the case are ongoing and noted that additional intelligence-led operations are expected in Koboko District as authorities intensify efforts to curb illegal drug production and enhance public safety.

The latest crackdown underscores the government’s continued commitment to fighting narcotics-related crimes and protecting communities from the social and health risks associated with illegal drug use.
